A sense of place

The history of Tioman Island is rich in cultural heritage. It was first discovered by ancient seafarers; the island was a source for these mariners to replenish and rejuvenate as it aided them on their way to the middle kingdom.

Trade was based on the rich wealth of the region’s natural products such as nutmeg, clover and pepper that were sought by Chinese and Middle Eastern markets and ceramics were used as a currency to trade.

An ancient myth shares that Tioman Island was originally found by a Chinese dragon princess who was making her way to Singapore for a tryst with her prince. She stopped to swim in the crystal-clear waters and never made it to Singapore. Instead, she transformed herself into magical Tioman Island.
